An Australian man who fleeced more than $50,000 from Thrifty Car Rental has been sentenced to two years in jail. Dean John Pitt used his position to steal from his employer to feed a drug habit which his lawyers claim was brought about by imprisonment for a past conviction.
The theft of $52,900 AUD, around £30,000, was made from the Thrifty office at Hobart Airport between November 2008 and September 2009, when Pitt worked as a duty manager for the popular car hire company.

The finalists in this year’s Australian Avis Travel Agent competition have been named. The six contestants, who come from across four different travel agency groups, will compete in what organisers have claimed is the most competitive year in the 14 year history of the scholarships.
The representatives come from American Express, Jetset Travelworld, Travelscene, CT Partners and, for the first time in the competition’s history, Flight Centre. The Avis Travel Agent Scholarships, which recognise outstanding displays of customer service through career development and international travel opportunities, have a total prize value of an estimated $40,000 AUD.

Travel companies across the country are reporting a massive rise in the number of people booking last minute holidays following England’s early exit from the World Cup at the hands of Germany. Thomas Cook and Thomson said that England’s defeat, coupled with a weakening Euro, was providing an unexpected boost for a travel industry which has had a rocky ride recently.
Holiday bookings this year have been hit by a variety of factors including the aftermath of a volcanic ash cloud over Europe, a series of strikes by British Airways cabin crew, Air Passenger Duty and an unpredictable economic climate.

South Africa’s Barloworld Automotive has announced that it has at last found buyers for its Budget and Avis operations in Scandinavia. The firm has been looking to dispose of its Swedish, Danish and Norwegian assets since 2008, following an internal strategic review which identified car rental projects in Scandinavia as non-core, and therefore disposable.

Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International Airport has finally opened its doors, if only to cargo traffic for the time being. The new airport, when completed, could well become the largest airport in the world. Although only one of the five planned runways has been built, and the first passengers are not expected until next March, Dubai’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum, declared that Dubai had finally delivered on its promise. He added that DWC-Al Maktoum was not simply an airport, but a city and a free-zone essential to the people. The airport was originally scheduled to open in 2008.
